Our first stop is the Brambruk Cultural Centre which has been developed to showcase the rich aboriginal heritage of the Grampians (Gariwerd) region. We’ll have an opportunity to watch a presentation on Aboriginal culture, listen to a didgeridoo performance and learn about the six seasons that occur in the Geriward and how the lives of the Jardwadjali and Djab Wurrung tribes were linked to this cycle.
It’s now time to head into the interior of the National Park and our first stop is Reid’s lookout which provides an awesome view over the Victoria Valley and highlights the sheer size of the National Park. We then take a short walk to the Balconies where the Jaws of Death rock formation provides an awesome photo opportunity.
Next stop is MacKenzie Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Victoria! We take a short walk to the base of the falls and then onto Fish Falls further downstream. This area was badly affected by the January 2014 bushfires and this walk gives a great opportunity to see how the native vegetation is recovering.
We now have a short drive back to Halls Gap and on the way we’ll stop at Boroka Lookout which provides awesome views looking south towards Halls Gap, Lake Bellfield and the Mt William Range.
It’s now time to head back to our backpackers accommodation but before we do, we stop at the Halls Gap football ground to check out our favourite mob of Kangaroos that like to call this ground home. It makes for a perfect photo opportunity!
In summer months with daylight savings there’s the opportunity to take a drive and a short steep 1.8km walk to the Mt. William summit to watch the sunset!
For those that are interested I highly recommend getting up for sunrise at Boroka Lookout! It will make for one of the best photo opportunities you’ll get in Victoria.
Today is all about exploring the Wonderland mountain range that imposes itself over Halls Gap. We head to the Sundial carpark where we depart for our walk. First stop is the impressive Lakeview lookout and then we head to the iconic Pinnacles lookout before descending through amazing rock formations including Silent Street and the Grand Canyon, down to Venus Baths where we can lay in the cool water pools! From here it’s a short descent to Halls Gap where we’ll have a lunch break.
It’s now time to depart Halls Gap for Bunjil Shelter one of the most important rock art sites of the region and the art depicts Bunjil the creator of the land and his two dingoes. The Shelter is located in the Black Ranges amongst giant granite boulders which provide awesome views of the entire Grampians range.
After a weekend filled with mountain scenery, unique rock formations, waterfalls, wildlife and aboriginal culture its now time to sample what else the region is famous for and that’s it’s wines! We’ll stop at Great Western Seppelt Winery for a tasting and also stop at Grampians Estate before driving back to Melbourne for a 7pm arrival.
